Goldberg makes appearance on ‘Criminal Intent’ By Ron Wynn, rwynn@nashvillecitypaper.com
April 13, 2006
Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Sundays, WSMV-Ch.4, 8 p.m.) has enjoyed a creative resurgence this season, though the show continues to lag behind ABC’s Desperate Housewives in ratings clout. But the decision to add two new cast members (Chris Noth and Annabella Sciorra) and have them alternating with returning regulars Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe has rejuvenated the program.
Now they’ve making additional moves with the announcement that Whoopi Goldberg has been tabbed for a guest role next month that could become a recurring one. She’s appearing as Chelsey Watkins, a character projected to evolve into a frequent nemesis for Noth’s detective Mike Logan character.
“I love the show and have wanted to come on forever,” Goldberg told Zap2it.com. “I told the writers, ‘I want to be dead-eye bad,’ so I hope they’re ready for my Criminal Intent.”
Goldberg hasn’t done any prime-time work since the end of her NBC sitcom two seasons ago. Though no date has yet been set for her appearance, hopefully it won’t be opposite the season finale of Desperate Housewives. It will also be interesting to see what NBC does with the show next season, as pro football moves into network’s the Sunday night spotlight.
The explosive and consistently excellent show Rescue Me returns to the FX cable network May 30 for its third season. There are plenty of unresolved storylines simmering, from the death of Tommy Gavin’s (Denis Leary) son to the Chief’s (Jack McGee) dilemma with his wife, who’s suffering from Alzheimer’s, and the emotional turmoil of both Franco (Daniel Sunjata) and Sean (Steven Pasquale). Susan Sarandon is appearing in three episodes for the new season as a romantic interest for Franco.
Showtime also announced that there would be a second season of the controversial Sleeper Cell, a program about an undercover FBI agent and Muslim who infiltrated a terrorist cell in Los Angeles. Both lead star Michael Ealy and co-star Oded Fehr will be returning, and the second season will run eight hours (the initial version was 10). Showtime hasn’t yet announced a date, but said that production would begin this summer. “Sleeper Cell became an instant signature show for us and has all the hallmarks of great premium cable,” Showtime Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt said when making the announcement in various media outlets. “It’s relevant, fearless and unlike anything else on television.”
On a far less political note, former American Idol contestant Lisa Tucker appears on Fox’s The O.C. (Thursdays, WZTV-Ch. 17, 8 p.m.) April 27. She’ll be featured in an episode focusing on the show’s Harbor School Senior prom. The O.C. has been competitive this season for Fox in the extremely difficult time slot opposite CSI, and producers promise plenty of fireworks for the May sweeps, though not disclosing any details.
