'NCIS' regular visits character's homelandBy Maureen Ryan

For two seasons now, Cote de Pablo, who was born in Chile and raised in Miami, has played Ziva David, an Israeli Mossad agent assigned to the "NCIS" investigative team.

But the actress had never been to Israel. Until now.

"Someone from the Israeli department of tourism watched the show and saw that there was an Israeli character on the show, and they were very happy about that," de Pablo said in a recent phone interview. "So they offered to give me a full tour of Israel."

The actress recently returned from her jaunt to Israel, and it sounded as though her head was still spinning. She said she loved the place and thought it gave her new insight into her driven character.

"I'm still trying to digest everything," de Pablo said. "Everywhere you go, you're surrounded by Muslims and Christians and Jews, you can feel the tension, and you can understand why that is going on, but at the same time, everywhere you walk is holy. I went to [the historic fort] Masada, I floated on the Dead Sea." Another experience that made a big impression on her was a visit to Yad Vashem, the Israeli memorial to the victims of the Holocaust.

"It was more of a trip for Ziva than for Cote," the actress said of her character on "NCIS," which has its fourth-season finale 7 p.m. Tuesday, Ch. 2. "It absolutely informed my insights into her soul."

She also said she now has ideas about the details of her character's life -- about where de Pablo may have lived in Israel, what her friends may have been like and what it's like to be part of the Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency. And seeing the country's culture in action was a big help.

"People are so gorgeous, but they're really laid back. And they're incredibly well-informed about what's going on in the world," she noted. "And a young woman walking around with a gun -- there's nothing strange or weird about that. You see it everywhere."

But she said the trip probably wouldn't really change that much about how she plays the role. "It actually made me say, 'OK, I was not so far off'
" in her characterization, says de Pablo. "The trip did that for me."

Another intense experience was her meeting with a former Mossad agent -- one of the men who captured Nazi official Adolf Eichmann in Argentina and brought him to Israel for a trial.

"How they did everything without technology -- I mean, how they smuggled Eichmann out of the country without any of that -- that's what intrigued me the most," she said.

One of the most intriguing things about "NCIS" has been the chemistry and sexual tension between de Pablo and hard-charging NCIS agent Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly).

"She does have feelings for DiNozzo, I think it's mutual," de Pablo said. "Do I think she should ever address them? Should they get together? I don't know."

De Pablo will "clarify her emotional confusion regarding DiNozzo," but not everything will be wrapped up in the season-ender, which sees all the team's agents taking a polygraph test and revealing shocking secrets. "It's not an episode where a lot of things are resolved, not every loose end is tied up."

There was a bit of resolution on the "NCIS" set, recently, however. While de Pablo was out of the country, a press report on TVGuide.com said that "NCIS" star Mark Harmon, who plays lead agent Leroy Gibbs, was unhappy with the management style of the show's creator, Donald Bellisario. In early May, it was announced that Bellisario will retain the title of executive producer, but won't be in charge of "NCIS"on a day-to-day basis next season.

"I think every single show is chaotic at some point or another," de Pablo said, when asked about reports of long shooting days due to last-minute script changes and so forth.

"After the fourth year of a show, people are tired. That's the best way to answer that question," she said.

Determinata fino a sembrare glaciale: l'agente del Mossad Ziva David abbassa la temperatura del team di NCIS (la quarta stagione è in onda su Rai Due) con la sua indole distaccata e sarcastica. Anche nella vita di tutti i giorni l'attrice di origine cilena Cote de Pablo è sovranamente indifferente al giudizio del prossimo. Per fare l'attrice, però, qualche compromesso ha dovuto accettarlo...



Com'è stato il tuo arrivo negli Stati Uniti dal Cile?
Non l'ho deciso io, avevo dieci anni, ero piccola e mi sono adeguata alla decisione di mia madre, che era un'attrice televisiva molto conosciuta in Cile. Quando mi sono trasferita a Miami l'ho odiata con tutto il cuore, sono stata scioccata dalla diversità culturale. Ho iniziato a vestirmi tutta di nero per dar sfogo al mio disagio ed esprimere un senso di ribellione. Mi sentivo soffocare e al tempo stesso non uscivo con altri cileni emigrati in America perché ero diversa, in questa specie di filosofia hippie che mi ero creata. Non mi truccavo e non curavo l'abbigliamento. Solo crescendo ho cominciato ad accettare tutto questo e a capire che era normale non essere cool. Mi sono rilassata.



Ora come ti senti?
Vivo a Los Angeles e mi piace molto lo stile di vita della gente: sono tutti salutisti, mangiano sano, bevono molta acqua. Anche se, a dire la verità, quando i miei amici mi dicono frasi come: «Dai, siamo a LA, truccati perchè dobbiamo uscire e fuori dal locale ci sono molti fotografi!» continuo ad uscire con i miei vecchi jeans e a sentirmi una hippie nel cuore. Credo sia ridicolo truccarsi in tutte le occasioni, ogni giorno, perfino per andare al mare. Quando in Cile si va in spiaggia, si va in spiaggia e basta. Ti porti il panino o quello che ti pare, ti sdrai e prendi il sole, a contatto con la natura. Non conta niente altro!



Questo lavoro non ti ha imposto dei compromessi?

Assolutamente sì! Guardami, vesto giacchette stupende, ho un fantastico makeup e cerco di essere disinvolta davanti alla stampa di tutto il mondo con un look studiato. Fa parte del gioco, che mi piaccia o meno, devo curare il mio aspetto specialmente in alcuni eventi e non dico che mi dispiaccia, solo che non sempre ne hai voglia.



Come hai cominciato a recitare?

Come dicevo, quando sono arrivata negli Stati Uniti li odiavo e sentivo il bisogno di esprimere tutta quella rabbia. Così ho ricordato che da piccola avevo partecipato ad un corso di recitazione. Sono andata sul palcoscenico urlando: «Siete dei bastardi». Mi piaceva il suono di quella parola, era divertente e io avevo solo 12 anni. Ho ottenuto due risultati: mi sono resa ridicola e ho guadagnato un periodo di punizione. Quando, invece, mi sono iscritta alla Performing Arts High School e ho ripetuto la stessa scena la mia insegnante mi ha detto brava e allora sono stata in grado di entrare a contatto con i miei sentimenti, mi sono sentita a casa.
È difficile recitare il ruolo di una agente del Mossad e con una storia come quella di Ziva alle spalle?

Io non sono ebrea, ma questa cultura mi ha sempre affascinata, fin da piccola. Da quando ho sentito parlare di Olocausto, ne sono diventata ossessionata. Da bambina ero molto curiosa e facevo sempre mille domande a mia madre: a sei anni avevo sentito la storia dello schianto aereo sulle Ande e sulla forma di cannibalismo e le ho subito chiesto spiegazioni. A 12 o 13 anni ho saputo dell'Olocausto e mi sembrava inconcepibile che tanta gente fosse morta a causa della sua religione. Così ho iniziato a frequentare molte persone ebree. A Miami, e in America in generale, ho molti amici ebrei, mentre in Cile, al contrario, avevo frequentato una scuola cattolica privata dalle suore e si respirava una realtà totalmente diversa. Adoro interpretare un personaggio ebreo.



E da un punto di vista tecnico?

Quello che Ziva fa la rende estremamente interessante: è esperta in omicidi e in armi, è stata sempre educata alla violenza. Ha ucciso il fratello e visto morire la sorella ammazzata da un attentato suicida. Guarda il mondo con distacco e sarcasmo, ma sa flirtare con gli uomini per estorcere loro quello che le serve. Eppure non sa relazionarsi con i suoi sentimenti: sarebbe troppo per lei!



Come hai ottenuto questo ruolo?
Ho fatto l'audizione per un “personaggio di origine europea”. La descrizione era generica, così mi sono presentata con un accento generico, poi ho capito che aveva origini israeliane e, man mano che si delineava il suo passato, mi è risultato più facile entrarvi in contatto.



Ti è pesato entrare a far parte di un cast già affiatato?

Non ci ho pensato minimamente, se lo avessi fatto sarei stata terrorizzata dalla paura, non credi? Francamente non m'importa nulla di piacere alla gente. M'interessa solo fare il mio lavoro e rendere verosimile il mio personaggio. A volte, però, mi capita di chiedermi se Ziva piaccia o meno, allora mi rispondo di sì in alcune circostanze e di no in altre. Proprio come nella vita reale dove non sempre gli uomini sono amati da tutti...
